The Crosstrek Continues to Be a Remarkable Subcompact Choice

Now in its second generation of production, the Subaru Crosstrek has established its reputation as a small crossover with unparalleled all-weather driving ability, as well as a decent amount of standard tech and safety features. The 2021 model year presents the vehicle in base, Premium, and Limited flavors, with a fourth model, the Sport, making its debut. The Sport is placed between the Premium and Limited. In addition, the Crosstrek receives a larger and more powerful flat-four engine to improve its acceleration ability.

In previous model years, the Subaru Crosstrek was powered by a 2.0-liter flat-four engine that felt underpowered with its output of 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. This year, though, welcomes its replacement with a larger and more powerful 2.5-liter flat-four. Standard on the Sport and Limited trims, this engine produces 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque; that's 30 more horsepower points and 21 more pound-feet of torque than the 2.0-liter, which remains on the base and Premium trims.

While the 2.0-liter is pinned to a 6-speed automatic transmission, the 2.5-liter gets a continuously variable transmission, which eliminates the energy-consuming gear-shifting mechanism of the former. The result goes beyond better acceleration; the 2.5-liter powertrain yields 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, and these numbers beat the 22/29 mpg EPA rating with the 2.0-liter setup. Unlike most other small crossovers, and like other Subaru vehicles, the Crosstrek has a standard all-wheel drive to maximize traction performance on slippery surfaces.

A five-seater, the Subaru Crosstrek can be substantially upgraded beyond the base model. Go with the Premium, and the crossover gains front-seat heating, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and orange contrast stitching on the seats. As the top-level trim, the Limited comes with leather upholstery and 6-way power adjustability on the driver's seat. The aptly named Sport is the only trim level with water-repellant Subaru-branded urethane seats and yellow contrast stitching.

Comfort and Convenience

For infotainment, the 2021 Crosstrek rolls with the Starlink multimedia system, which combines a four-speaker AM/FM stereo system, Bluetooth hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, a USB port and an audio jack for hooking up mobile devices, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen. Remote keyless entry is also standard.

For a boost with two additional speakers, a single-disc CD player, a second USB port, a trial subscription to SiriusXM Radio, and a Wi-Fi hotspot for Internet access at 4G LTE speeds, go with at least the Premium.

At the Sport trim level, Subaru introduces proximity keyless access, push-button engine start, and a third USB port. Only the Limited comes with features such as HD Radio for digital tuning and an 8-inch touchscreen in place of the 6.5-inch touchscreen.

Safety Features

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek comes with seven airbags to prevent injury when there's a crash. Other safety features include a rearview camera, daytime running lights, active torque vectoring, electronic vehicle stability and traction control, hill start assist, daytime running lights, and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist and override.

You will have to go with at least the Sport to get the EyeSight suite, which provides technologies to prevent crashes from occurring. These technologies include pre-collision braking, lane departure, and sway warning, and adaptive cruise control with lane centering. Also added are high beam assist and hill descent control. Only the Limited has blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking.
